What is this tool?

Tipping is a standard part of dining out in the United States, where servers typically rely on tips for a large share of their income. Fifteen percent is the traditional baseline for decent service, 18 to 20 percent is common for good service, and 25 percent or more rewards an excellent experience. This tip calculator shows the tip, the grand total, and exactly what each person owes when the bill is split.

It is also handy beyond restaurants: use it for food delivery drivers (typically 15 to 20 percent), rideshares, hair stylists and barbers (usually 20 percent), and hotel housekeeping (a few dollars per night). Enter the bill, pick a percentage, set the party size, and the per-person numbers update as you type.

How to use it

  1. Enter the bill amount before tip.
  2. Set the tip percentage — use the quick buttons or type your own.
  3. Enter how many people are splitting the bill.
  4. Read the total and the per-person amount instantly; nothing to submit.

Formula & method

Tip = bill × tip percentage. Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ number of people. For example, an 18 percent tip means multiplying the bill by 0.18.

Worked example

A dinner bill of $86.40 with a 20 percent tip adds $17.28, for a total of $103.68. Split four ways, each person pays $25.92, of which $4.32 is their share of the tip.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant in the US?

Fifteen percent is the traditional minimum for adequate service, 18–20 percent is the current norm for good service, and 25 percent or more is generous. For takeout, a few dollars or 10 percent is appreciated but less expected.

Do you tip on the total before or after tax?

Custom is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people simply tip on the final total — the difference is small and tipping a little extra is never a problem.

How much should I tip for food delivery?

Fifteen to 20 percent of the order, with a minimum of about $5 for small orders, is a good rule of thumb. Consider tipping more in bad weather or for long distances.
