What is this tool?

Job postings in the US mix hourly wages and annual salaries freely, which makes comparing offers harder than it should be. This paycheck calculator converts in both directions using the standard full-time year: 40 hours a week times 52 weeks equals 2,080 work hours. It also handles overtime the way the Fair Labor Standards Act requires for most hourly workers — time and a half (1.5×) beyond 40 hours a week.

Use it before accepting a job, negotiating a raise, or budgeting a household. The salary breakdown shows monthly, biweekly (the most common US pay schedule), weekly and daily equivalents. Note that these are gross figures before federal and state taxes, Social Security and Medicare (FICA), and any deductions for health insurance or retirement plans.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether you are converting from an hourly wage or from an annual salary.
  2. For hourly pay, enter your rate, scheduled hours per week, any weekly overtime hours and weeks worked per year.
  3. For salary, enter the annual amount — the hourly equivalent uses the 2,080-hour standard year.
  4. Click Calculate to see annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly and daily pay.

Formula & method

Annual pay from hourly = (regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × 1.5) × weeks per year. The standard full-time year is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours, so hourly equivalent = annual salary ÷ 2,080. Biweekly pay = annual ÷ 26 pay periods.

Worked example

An hourly wage of $25.00 equals $52,000 a year at full time ($25 × 2,080 hours), which is $4,333.33 a month or $2,000.00 every two weeks before taxes. Working five hours of overtime each week at time and a half ($37.50 an hour) adds another $9,750 a year.

Frequently asked questions

How many work hours are in a year?

The standard full-time figure used by US employers and the federal government is 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week multiplied by 52 weeks. Part-time schedules and unpaid time off reduce the actual total.

How is overtime calculated in the US?

Most hourly (non-exempt) employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek, under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Some states, like California, add daily overtime rules too.

Is this my take-home pay?

No — this calculator shows gross pay before taxes and deductions. Federal income tax, state tax, FICA (7.65 percent for Social Security and Medicare) and benefits premiums all reduce the final paycheck.
